Throughout 2008 and 2009, many joint task force meetings were held between Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Congregation (OCUUC) and Tapestry. There were also subcommittee meetings and joint Board meetings. All meetings were aimed at strategies to bring the two congregations together into a single entity, thus creating a larger presence in the community at large. Though both congregations still see this as a viable long-term goal, the economic climate has posed challenges related to OCUUC receiving a firm offer from a potential renter or buyer for their Victoria location – a first step that is key to going ahead. Furthermore, a thorough look into the financial details involved for the many other tasks involved, including realtor fees, conditional use permit, tenant improvements, architectural drawings, furniture, and moving costs shows that a larger outlay of dollars is needed than can be raised readily at this time.
As a result, the merger is currently on hold. It is hoped that conversations will resume when the economic climate improves. In the meantime, both congregations will work separately and diligently to become, and stay, fiscally responsible as this is essential for the joint visioning process to resume.
