"The great end in religious instruction is not to stamp our minds upon the young, but to stir up their own; Not to make them see with our eyes, but to look inquiringly and steadily with their own; Not to give them a definite amount of knowledge, but to inspire a fervent love of truth... In a word, the great end is to awake the soul, to excite and cherish spiritual life."
— William Ellery Channing

Religious Education for Children & Youth

RECY Buzz

Katelynn Riva, our Director of Religious Education for Children and Youth is on family leave to care for one of our new babies, Emilia Julie born on May 28 at 7lbs., 8 oz. We welcome Emilia to our midst and are anxious to see both at Tapestry in the near future.

The children are enjoying our teachers with a new summer curriculum.  Kids from Kindergarten through 6th grade are leaning about “Morale Tales.”  They are enjoying the variety of activities and like having guest readers come in and read a story to them each week.

We are still short many volunteers to teach, assist and read these stories this summer.  Please see the sign-up sheet outside of Katelynn’s office, or email Christine Krueger to assist or teach at .  To be a guest reader (no experience needed), please contact Pat Glass. The Junior High and High School aged youth are working with Jocelyn Cooper as they listen to previously recorded sermons and then have a lively discussion together.

We welcome our new and veteran teachers to be involved this summer.  Please stop by upstairs and sign up as we can’t run the program without your help!  If any RECY issues come up, feel free to email the co-chairs, Christine Krueger or Kathy Tuominen-Lenney .
Thank you.

Explorers, Kindergarten – Grade 6

Moral Talesby Alice Anachecka-Naseman and Elisa Pearmain.

Grade K-6 Teaching Calendar coordinated by Christine Krueger,

  • Moral Tales uses worship, music, story, real life examples, and activities, such as the Moral Compass and Gems of Goodness to connect and engage students.
  • Moral Tales, through story, attempts to provide children with the spiritual and ethical tools they will need to make choices and take actions reflective of their Unitarian Universalist beliefs and values.
  • Moral Tales nurtures spiritual growth by fostering spiritual practices such as generosity, forgiveness, empathy, faith, non-violence, and living in balance. It encourages participants to be responsible, courageous, and persistent in working for goodness and justice in the world.

Summer Guest Readers are special classroom guests that join the class to share the day's story with Explorers. Readers are asked to take their story home, in advance, to prepare. Guest Readers coordinated by Pat Glass, .

Youth Group, Explorers Grade 7- 12

Playing with Fire; Creative Conflict Resolution for Young Adults by Fiona Macbeth and Nic Fine

Grades 7-12 Teaching Calendar coordinated by Jocelyn Cooper, .

Playing with Fire is a practical ready-to-use program that helps participants explore situations of conflict and interpersonal violence while learning and practicing skills and strategies for turning destructive conflicts into constructive dialogs.

Youth leaders facilitate the program, with the help of an adult advisor. Youth, please sign up on the teaching calendar.

Summer Guest Readers

This summer, RECY hopes to see new faces in the classroom; we are looking for adults to share the day's story with Explorers; it is wonderful when adult members take the time to visit classrooms and get to know the Explorers better. Think about being a Guest Reader this summer. Stories will be provided in advance and you only need to commit to one Sunday. For more information or to sign up visit the RECY board in the Social Hall or contact .

Senior High Our Whole Lives, Grade 10-12

Our Whole Lives uses a comprehensive approach, to help senior-high youth gain the knowledge, life principles and skills they need to express their sexuality in life-enhancing ways. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas:

  • human development
  • relationships
  • personal skills
  • sexual behavior
  • sexual health
  • society and culture

The class will begin in March and will meet 12 times, beginning with an orientation, date to be announced. Although there will be sign ups and an orientation before the class begins, right now I am assessing interest so please let me know if you hope to sign your teen up for the class or if someone you know is interested please email me, we need at least five students to run the class.

Volunteers and Teachers

We ask that each family with children in the program have one adult volunteer a minimum of once a month. We welcome and encourage volunteers who do not have children in the program! Please contact a RECY committee member with questions or to sign up. Thank you!
